The article that I found this week is out of Connecticut concerning PFAS being present in the water supply. PFAS is a chemical that is used in weatherproofing and other consumer products that are specifically designed to not break down, so they persist in our environment. The long term effects of the chemical are still being studied by scientists, but PFAS has been hypothesized to cause higher cholesterol levels, decreased immune response, and delayed growth and development. The water treatment plant in question does not have the means to remove PFAS from the water supply, so the focus is on finding the main sources of PFAS in wastewater. It is distressing to think that wastewater plants cannot remove potentially dangerous chemicals such as PFAS. This fact emphasizes how important it is to be aware of what we are putting into our water supply and reduce the amount of chemicals we put down the drain. Wastewater treatment plants make our water safer, but they are not magic!
